The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned that another phreatic or steam-driven eruption may occur at Bulusan Volcano in the coming days, following the eruption on April 28.
“Another phreatic eruption is possible in the next few days, and we continue to closely monitor the situation,” said Phivolcs Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol during a televised briefing on Tuesday, April 29.
“We urge the public to stay out of the four-kilometer permanent danger zone, as phreatic eruptions can occur unexpectedly, even at Alert Level 0,” he added.
Bulusan Volcano’s alert status was raised from Level 0 (normal) to 1 (low-level unrest), following the phreatic eruption on April 28.
On April 29, Phivolcs observed a weak ash emission at 5:37 a.m., which lasted 24 minutes and reached 100 meters above the summit.
Phivolcs has also recorded 89 volcanic earthquakes over the past 24 hours.
Bacolcol noted that volcanic earthquakes had increased on April 21, a week before the April 28 eruption.

He explained that the rise in seismic activity suggests that magma or hydrothermal fluids may be moving beneath the surface, but this does not always indicate an imminent major eruption.
“However, if volcanic earthquakes become more frequent, they could signal a potential volcanic eruption,” he said.
The last eruption at Bulusan Volcano occurred in June 2022.
