Ang Probinsyano Party-list Rep. Alfred delos Santos has joined his fellow congressmen in expressing deep sorrow and sympathy to the families of the victims of the car-ramming tragedy in Vancouver, Canada over the weekend.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families at this heartbreaking moment," Delos Santos said in a statement Monday, April 28.
"We are one with the one-million strong Filipino community in Canada and all over the world in lifting each other in prayers, kindness and action during this difficult time," he said.
The tragic incident, which took the lives of 11 people and injured many others, happened during the celebration of Lapu-Lapu Day in Vancouver. Lapu-Lapu was a powerful Visayan chieftain of Mactan Island who fiercely resisted Spanish colonization. He is considered the first Filipino hero
Delos Santos said the event in Vancouver, which was meant to be a day of pride and unity for the Filipino-Canadian community--has not lost its meaning.
“The strength, resilience of Lapu-Lapu is very much present among us Filipinos, we pray for our kababayans in Canada to continue holding this in their hearts and minds,” Delos Santos noted.
He encouraged the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver to include mental health support in their assistance to the victims and affected families.
“We know the DFA and our consulate in Vancouver are working hard to extend appropriate assistance to our kababayans there, we appeal for the inclusion of mental health support on top of finding justice for the victims. Let us work together to uphold justice, compassion and healing,” the solon concluded.
