Police apprehend protesting Aetas

CAMP OLIVAS, City of San Fernando, Pampanga – Police apprehended several Aetas on April 18 near the Mount Pinatubo crater in Capas, Tarlac for alleged violations of local ordinances and national laws, including obstruction of public passage and unauthorized entry into an environmentally protected area.

The incident caught the attention of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, prompting PRO-3 to assure the public that the case is being handled with full transparency, respect for cultural rights, and adherence to due process.

The Capas Municipal Police Station said the arrests were carried out in accordance with police operational procedures to ensure that the rights of those involved were protected.

Police Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo, PRO-3 chief, said their arrest followed procedures and the law.

Fajardo said they are currently reviewing the incident and compiling all relevant reports and documents to provide an accurate and objective account. 

She added that the NCIP and other concerned stakeholders will be invited to a joint dialogue to address issues, promote mutual understanding, and pursue constructive solutions.

The PRO-3 said it will implement community immersion programs and conduct refresher training for its personnel through the Regional Community Affairs and Development Division (RCADD) to strengthen engagement and cultural sensitivity when working with indigenous communities.

Fajardo said they  remain steadfast in their mission to serve and protect all sectors of society with fairness, integrity, and respect for human dignity.

Meanwhile, a police officer was injured while managing traffic in Barangay San Matias, Santo Tomas, Pampanga on Saturday morning, April 26.

Investigation said the lawman was signaling vehicles to slow down when a white Mitsubishi L300 van driven by a 49-year-old male resident of Santo Tomas failed to slow down and struck him.

The police officer was taken to the hospital and now stable condition. 

The driver was promptly apprehended for legal proceedings.
