Administration Senate bet Las Piñas City lone district Rep. Camille Villar says there is a need to integrate the government agencies' roles with the specific aim of looking into the welfare of OFWs.
Rep. Villar, a House deputy speaker, had this to say in light of the apparent difficulties being experienced by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
According to Rep. Villar the agency is still experiencing “birth pains” in its mandate of handling cases of malreated OFWs, overstaying Filipinos, repatriation, and other cases.
The department was created by virtue of the DMW Act or the Republic Act (RA) No. 11641, which was signed by then president Rodrigo Duterte on Dec. 30, 2021. The DMW Act took effect on Feb. 3, 2022, wherein the DMW was created, established, and constituted.
The government should always ensure the protection of OFWs, and at the same time teach them and their families about ways to invest their hard-earned income, said the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas ticket member.
Rep. Villar noted that she and her family “have a long and deep relationship with OFWs". She noted how her father, former Senate President Manny Villar built his first housing unit for an OFW some 50 years ago.
This is the reason why the Villars--through the initiative of former Senate President Manny Villar and Senator Cynthia Villar--came up with the annual gathering of OFWs and their families dubbed the OFW Family Summit.
“We have the OFW Family Summit that aims to help the families of OFWs here to form a livelihood or makapag negosyo sila (to start a business) or form a livelihood. We also give house and lot as tribute to every OFW family who dreams to have their own homes,” Rep. Villar said.
During the OFW Summit, various seminars about government assistance to OFWs are held, as well as discussions on how to start a business; financial literacy discussions; and inspirational talks from successful OFWs who have put up businesses back here at home.
Rep. Villar vowed that she would always be there for OFWs to continue working for their welfare.
