BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Friday, April 25, reported the completion of a P33-million evacuation center in Carmen, Surigao del Sur.

DPWH-13 Director Engr. Alex B. Ramos, in a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, said the facility has an area of 1,250-square meters and can accommodate more than 2,600 families.
It has spacious sleeping quarters, gender-segregated restrooms, a dining area, sinks with running water, fully equipped kitchen, laundry area, storage area, clinic, a breastfeeding station, a prayer room, and playroom for children.
It will also serve as safe haven for families, particularly those in vulnerable sectors during disasters, Ramos said.
The DPWH turned over the facility to the local government unit and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council last week.
Meanwhile, the DPWH-13 said that preventive maintenance activities on the Agusan-Davao section of the Daang Maharlika in Barangay Kapatungan, Trento, Agusan del Sur have been completed.
Ramos said that the 4.80-kilometer asphalt overlay project forms part of the comprehensive widening and upgrading efforts on the Daang Maharlika, the country's main transport backbone that interconnects Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The project was funded by the DPWH-Regional Office 13 under the 2024 DPWH Regular Infrastructure Program with a P44.3-million budget.
