The Angels looked poised to pull an upset against the Chinese team before the latter held its ground to catch the semifinal bus.

The two-hour and 18-minute match was a spectacle of power hitters exchanging blows with Baic's Ye Jin and Petro Gazz reinforcement Gia Day carrying their respective teams in the five-set thriller.

With its hard-fought victory, Baic Motor arranged a semis duel against Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An Saturday, April 26, at the same venue. Kazakhstan's Zhetysu VC and Thailand's Nakhon Ratchasima Qmin will clash in the other bracket.

On the other hand, Petro Gazz, which recently bagged the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference crown, got eliminated with a lone win to show which was a 25-8, 25-12, 25-12 dominance over Hong Kong’s Hip Hing in the elimination round of Pool B.

Last Friday, Creamline and PLDT were booted out in the contest.

Jin, the tournament’s top scorer with 83 points overall, dropped 37 off 33 attacks and four blocks. Yufei Lu tallied 19, while Lanfeng Shan and Hongyi Shen combined for 23 points.

Day, meanwhile, was equally impressive with 35 points, all from attacks.

Petro Gazz mainstays Brooke Van Sickle (17), Jonah Sabete (15), and MJ Phillips (11) provided the support offensively.

Meanwhile, VTV Binh Dien shrugged off a second-set stumble and dispatched Taipei’s Kaohsiung Taipower, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 28-26, to march on to the semis.

The triumvirate of Thi Phuong Lu, Thi Nhu Quynh Vi, and Thi Thanh Thuy Tran delivered the goods for the Vietnamese club.
