Bohol Light draws on solar power to meet Tagbilaran's power demand

Razon-led Bohol Light Company Inc. (BLCI) announced that it would increase its reliance on renewable energy (RE) to meet 25 percent of the power demand in Tagbilaran City.

In a statement on Friday, April 25, BLCI said it will source its power from the upcoming 8.4-megawatt (MW) solar project of Mabuhay Power.

According to BLCI, Mabuhay Power will supply clean energy via solar to meet one-fourth of the city’s electricity demand, which is nearing 31 MW.

Roel Castro, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of BLCI, said that the renewable contribution—which would be a pioneer move in Visayas—would bring in more investments to Bohol.

“This is a big percentage and will definitely help in attracting investors. They always ask about the percentage of green energy in our system. So, we are becoming a very attractive investment area,” he said.

“We will make sure that whatever power will be coming in, we will manage it well, optimally, to make sure that the price will be reduced,” Castro added.

Aside from solar power integration, BLCI is also looking into infrastructure investments that would accommodate the growing power demand in the area.

These investments include welcoming a new sub-transmission line from the new Corella substation of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to the old Tagbilaran airport, which would be transformed into an information technology (IT) park.

"We will also be putting up a new substation in that area in preparation for the growth in the area because we're already seeing the signs happening,” the BLCI chief said.

BLCI also assured its costumers that it is committed to bring down power rates despite rising generation costs, as Castro reported that BLCI has the lowest rate among other distribution utilities (DUs) in Visayas, followed by MORE Power in Iloilo and Negros Power, which are both managed by Razon-led PrimElectric.
