A lawmaker is pushing for a standardized wage for Filipino teachers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid reports of unreasonably low salaries being offered to them.
OFW Party-list Rep. Marissa Magsino recently held a consultation with Filipino teachers based in UAE, who reported to her that some of them were only receiving around 1,000 Dirhams or roughly P15,420 salary per month.
Such amount was even lower than the salary they were receiving in the Philippines, which ranged from P19,000 to P27,000.
It is also even lower than the salary for household service workers in UAE, which is around 1,500 Dirhams.
Magsino expressed her concern over the salary issue, which she said does not match the level of professionalism that Filipino teachers have. She said, it deprives them of their value.
Magsino also reached out to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo and Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac to take an action, particularly to standardize the salary of Filipino teachers in UAE.
