The registered owner and the driver of the trailer truck that caused multiple vehicular accidents in Marikina City on Wednesday night, April 23, that left at least three people dead were summoned by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II said they already issued a show cause order (SCO) against the registered owner and the driver as part of the conduct of investigation into the fatal accident.
“We want to know what really happened, and part of it is to determine if there were lapses on the part of the registered owner in terms of truck maintenance and the condition of the driver at the time of the accident,” said Mendoza.
Based on the police report, the truck was loaded with a 40-foot container van and was travelling along Fortune Avenue in Marikina City at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday when the incident happened.
Police said the vehicle suddenly stopped while travellng on the ascending part of the road, and started moving backward. A police report stated that the truck lost its brakes.
As a result, the truck hit the vehicles at the back and resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.
At least three people died, reportedly a jeepney driver and two people from a sedan, while 10 others were injured. The truck driver, on the other hand, is now under police custody.
Mendoza said the driver of the truck will be asked to explain why he should not be punished for reckless driving and being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle—the penalty is revocation of the license.
He said the investigation will also determine if the truck is being properly maintained.
Mendoza said the driver’s license of the truck driver was already suspended while the truck was placed under alarm.
