The Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed an agreement on security cooperation that is expected to deepen bilateral relations and foster mutual commitment to public safety and national security, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said on Wednesday, April 23.
In his official visit in UAE, DILG Secretary Juanito Victor ‘Jonvic’ Remulla met with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, His Highness Sheikh (Lt. Gen.) Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan where the cooperation was formalized on April 21.
The DILG said the signing of the agreement marked a pivotal moment in the longstanding partnership between the two nations, underscoring their shared commitment to the rule of law, peace, and regional stability.
It noted that the bilateral agreement seeks to enhance cooperation in addressing security threats through the exchange of information and the implementation of joint initiatives designed to prevent, detect, and combat various forms of transnational and organized crime.
“Areas of focus include, but are not limited to, cybercrime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other forms of serious criminal activity,’’ the DILG explained.
Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, Alfonso A. Ver, welcomed the signing of the agreement and hailed it as a milestone in Philippine-UAE relations.
“While over the years, the security sectors of the UAE and the Philippines have cooperated in various capacities, the signing of this agreement institutionalizes that collaboration. It provides a strategic framework that will guide our future engagements in a more structured, sustainable, and effective manner,” Ver stated.
He also emphasized that the agreement reflects not only the shared security interests of both countries but also the deepening trust and mutual respect that characterize Philippine-UAE relations.
