Gov't strikes back at 'kamote' drivers; suspends license of 671 motorists, summons 1,165 car owners

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon announces the road safety reforms that the national government will be implementing amid cases of road accidents, especially during the Holy Week, in a press briefing at the LTO Central Office in Quezon City on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
The national government has started flexing its muscles against errant motorists after the Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended the driver’s license of a total of 671 motorists for involvement in road accidents and drug-related offenses during the Holy Week period alone.
LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II the agency is now also preparing a total of 1,165 show cause orders (SCOs) against motor vehicle owners who failed to properly maintain their vehicles during the random roadworthiness inspections across the country also last week.
“This is really unprecedented on the part of the LTO. A lot of driver’s licenses were suspended all in relation to traffic violations and road safety rules,” said Mendoza during a press briefing on Wednesday, April 23, at the LTO Central Office in Quezon City, with Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
Of the 671 suspended driver’s licenses, Mendoza said 574 of them were related to road accidents while 97 belong to public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers who tested positive during the random and surprise drug tests last week.
“We never really reached this level before but we will work double time on this because as our Secretary Vince Dizon said, road safety will not be compromised,” he added.
Dizon, for his part, announced the revocation of the driver’s license of the bus driver who ignored the pleas of his passenger to slow down in La Union, the video of it went viral on social media.
In the same press briefing, Dizon said this is also the first time that the government issued a lot of suspension orders and SCOs to motorists.
But he explained that it is necessary to impose discipline among motorists amid the more than 400 road accidents reported during the Holy Week alone.
“The President’s instructions are clear. For us in the DOTr to ensure that the public is safe, and that the commuting public travel safely and conveniently,” said Dizon.
Dizon then warned motorists to behave as the DOTr, through the LTO and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will be strict in running after reckless and abusive motorists.
“In the next few days, in the next few weeks, there will be more of these undisciplined drivers that will be losing their licenses. We are sending a strong message to everyone, especially PUV drivers, that we will not tolerate reckless and dangerous driving,” said Dizon.
“To our commuting public, we just want to let you know that upon the orders and directives of the President himself, we will protect you from these abusive drivers,” said Dizon.
President Marcos earlier called out "kamote" drivers, or undisciplined motorists, amid cases of road rage and road accidents.
