University of Santo Tomas booted University of the Philippines out of semifinal contention with a rousing 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 win to complete the Final Four cast of the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena Wednesday, April 23.

The Golden Tigresses leaned on Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado to dominate the Fighting Maroons and list their ninth win against four losses, enough to secure their semis ticket and strengthen their bid for a twice-to-beat advantage.
UST now awaits the result between De La Salle and Adamson to confirm its seeding. Reigning champion National University remains as the No. 1 team while the next three places will be determined pending the outcome of the final assignments of DLSU (8-4) and FEU (8-5).
UP, on other hand, fell short of its bid as it dropped to fifth spot with a 6-7 win-loss record.
“In-apply lang namin ‘yong mga pinagaralan namin… sobrang laking tulong namin na recovery rest namin, sobrang gaan lang sa feeling and kaya naging ready kami today,” said Poyos.
“Gusto talaga naming makasok ng final four no’ng umpisa palang sinabi na ni coach (Kungfu Reyes) na isa ‘yon sa mga goal namin and thankfully nakuha namin,” UST skipper Detdet Pepito added.
Poyos took charge anew for UST, pouring 19 points on 18 attacks and one ace that went with nine excellent digs and five excellent receptions. Jurado contributed 13 points.
Cassie Carballo displayed her playmaking prowess off 19 excellent sets, while Em Banagua shone defensively as she chipped in 12 points on four attacks and eight blocks. Mabeth Hilongo added eight points.
Niña Ytang tried to keep UP’s campaign alive by tallying 16 points, while Joan Monares and Kassie Doering put up seven points each.
