2,600 kids join summer peace camp in Cotabato

MAKILALA, Cotabato – At least 2,600 school children gathered for the simultaneous opening of the Summer Kids Peace Camp here and President Roxas town on Tuesday, April 22.

Now on its 12th year, the SKPC is an annual gathering of school children in different towns of Cotabato province until June.

Gov. Emmylou "Lala" Talino-Mendoza said that the event aims to foster peaceful coexistence of Christians, Indigenous Peoples and Muslims by inculcating the lessons from the kinship of Tabunaway and Mamalu.

Mendoza said that the lessons from the oral history of Tabunaway and Mamalu is an important reminder among the young generation on the harmonious relationship of their ancestors.

According to the oral history of Tabunaway and Mamalu, they were brothers belonging to an indigenous tribe before Islam came to Mindanao in 1300s.

And when Arab missionary Shariff Kabungsuan came to Mindanao, Tabunaway embraced Islam while Mamalu retained his ancestors’ beliefs. But even as they have parted ways, they vowed to honor their kinship and lived together in harmony.

A teacher from one of the barangays of this town told Manila Bulletin that she has been attending the SKPC for five years and noted the changes among her students in school.

"I have noted that the children have learned so much on peaceful coexistence and maintaining harmonious relationship with their schoolmates. That's the importance of learning from our own history," she said in the vernacular.

Since the inception of the SKPC, Mendoza has been reiterating to participants the importance of grassroots peacebuilding in the province amid the cycle of conflict in the past.

She believes that the SKPC is one of the venues for the young generation to instill the values of dialogue and mutual respect among tribes in the region.

Mendoza said that she does not want the children to grow up with hatred in their hearts.

The governor added that peace camp also aims to teach children disaster preparedness, health, leadership skills, and other essential life skills.

Mendoza added that peace talks with different participants, talent nights, as well as bonding not only with fellow campers but also with teachers from other schools will be held.

Aside from this town and President Roxas, the SKPC will also be held in 14 other towns in this province and Kidapawan City with an estimated 18,000 Grade 5 pupils participating.
