La Carlota bans outdoor mass  gatherings as Kanlaon remains restive

BACOLOD CITY – Outdoor mass gatherings at the public plaza and Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School oval in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental have been discouraged due to Kanlaon Volcano.

The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) recommended the prohibition of such activities in a meeting with Mayor Rex Jalando-on on Monday, April 21, to address safety measures following ash emissions on April 14 and 15.

The DRRMC emphasized that such gatherings during volcanic unrest can heighten community vulnerability and impede emergency response operations.

All activities at the city gymnasium and oval from April 26 onwards were cancelled to prepare for possible evacuation.

The council also urged the public to wear face masks when outdoors as volcanic ash exposure can cause respiratory issues, eye and skin irritation, and other health risks, particularly in open or poorly ventilated areas.

The La Carlota City Tourism Office reminded the people of La Carlota to refrain from spreading or believing unverified information pertaining to the staging of the 43rd Pasalamat Festival.

Jalando-on postponed the event due to Kanlaon. There is no official date yet on when it will be held.  

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-6 (Western Visayas) has received a water tanker from the Central Office in Quezon City to strengthen its disaster response efforts, particularly in areas affected by the recent ash emissions.

The water tanker capable of transporting large volume of potable water will support the supply and delivery of clean water to evacuation centers and communities facing water shortages.

The unit turned over to La Carlota City on April 19 will primarily serve Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in evacuation centers impacted by the ashfall on April 15.
