Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) reported that it has upgraded a power transformer at Tayabas delivery point (DP) substation to address rising power demand in Quezon province and neighboring towns in Laguna.
In a statement, Meralco said the newly energized power transformer has increased its capacity from 100 megavolt-amperes (MVA) to 300 MVA, as it would provide an N-1 contingency—a safety measure that allows the system to continue operating when one component fails.
It would also help accommodate high load growth and improve the distribution system’s overall resilience.
According to Meralco, the project would enhance operational efficiency through a projected reduction of 168,691.32 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in system loss.
“The upgraded 230 kilovolt (kV)-115 kV Tayabas DP substation will ensure continuous and stable power supply to major industrial and commercial customers, such as Tayabas Community Hospital Inc., Southern Luzon State University, Allied Care Experts (ACE) Medical Center Sariaya, Primark Town Center Tayabas, Pacific Mall Lucena, Quezon Medical Center, Lucena MMG General Hospital, the Quezon provincial governor’s office, and SM City Lucena,” it elaborated.
Additionally, the substation would be able to welcome new load applications to support Quezon’s rising economic growth and development.
Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet explained that this upgrade is part of the many projects they hope to improve.
“The uprating of the Tayabas power transformer is just one of the many projects we have lined up to enhance the reliability and capacity of our distribution system. Projects like this enable us to continue providing safe, stable, and sufficient power to homes, businesses, and vital institutions in fast-developing areas like Quezon province,” he said.
“As energy demand continues to grow, we remain dedicated to building a resilient distribution network that is capable of supporting economic development that ultimately improves the lives of Filipinos,” Savet added.
Earlier this month, Meralco also energized the 115kV-34.5 kV substation in Hacienda Sta. Elena, which was designed to increase the power quality in the cities of Santa Rosa and Cabuyao in Laguna, as well as Silang and Tagaytay City in Cavite.
