Look sharp, smooth, and suave with these fresh ways to style tailored menswear

Suit up, but make it super fly

For its spring 2025 exhibition, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is embracing the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Inspired by the book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity” by Monica L. Miller, the showcase will spotlight menswear—specifically the style and influence of Black men throughout history.

Fashion savants know that the exhibition theme heavily influences the sartorial spectacle of the Met Gala, the annual fundraising event benefiting the Costume Institute. This year, attendees are invited to interpret the “Tailored for You” dress code. Expect modern takes on dandyism to dominate the red carpet, with playful menswear staples like hats, ties, canes, brooches, and pocket squares making stylish appearances.

In the Philippines, wearing suits and tailored pieces is a sartorial tradition inherited from the American colonial period, which coincided with the rise of the butterfly collar in the 1920s. While we may not see sharply dressed men walking the streets daily, tailored pieces remain a staple for formal events. But if you’re looking to take your suiting game beyond the boardroom, here are some tricks we picked up from some stylish gents:

Play with accessories
Take your suit from classic to downtown cool with just a few accessory swaps. A basketball cap adds an unexpected edge and personality, while trading a tie for a scarf brings effortless, off-duty charm—still polished, just with a bit more attitude.

Do bold pairings
Pairing a suit jacket with denim jeans is a fashion power move—unexpected, effortlessly cool, and just rebellious enough. The sharp sophistication of a suit contrasts perfectly with denim’s casual ease, striking a balance that’s both refined and relaxed.

Explore colors and materials
Wearing a suit in the Philippines is no easy feat—that’s why finding one that not only fits well but is also made from fabrics ideal for the tropical climate is key. A linen blazer is a great place to start—and don’t be afraid to experiment with color.
