Reelectionist lawmaker Maria Vanessa C. Aumentado, wife of Bohol Gov. Aris Aumentado, is seeking millions of pesos in damages from lawyer Dan Neri Lim, Arlene P. Karaan, and Dan Ismael C. Lim.
Dan Neri is running against Gov. Aumentado in the May elections. Dan Ismael is the son of Dan Neri. Karaan is a former barangay captain in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
Rep. Aumentado filed libel charges before the Office of the City Prosecutor of Quezon City on April 15 against Dan Neri and Karaan for allegedly uttering defamatory and slanderous statements against her.
She complained that during a radio program that was also streamed on social media, Dan Neri and Karaan questioned the paternity of her youngest child by alleging that the child has a different father.
Rep. Aumentado said what Dan Neri and Karaan said in the radio program constituted malicious gossip and insinuated that she is unfaithful to her husband.
She added Lim and Karaan “casted aspersions on her person, tarnished her reputation, and subjected her to public scorn and disgrace.”
Rep. Aumentado said “the malicious imputations caused her sleepless nights, serious anxiety, mental anguish, loss of appetite, and deep sense of dishonor not only as a public official, but more importantly as a mother and a wife.”
She also filed election offense cases before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) against Dan Neri and Karaan.
The lawmaker accused them of violating Comelec Resolution No. 1116, otherwise known as the Anti-Discrimination and Fair Campaigning Guidelines for the 2025 National and Local Election and BARMM Parliamentary Elections (NLBPE) and its related laws and jurisprudence.
Rep. Aumentado said Dan Neri and Karaan committed gender-based harassment, willful and malicious utterances of lewd statements, and unwanted sexual, misogynistic, and sexist remarks during this election period.
She alleged that Dan Neri and Karaan sexually objectified her by discussing her underwear in a most demeaning manner live on air.
In addition, Rep. Aumentado also filed three counts of cyber libel before the Office of the City Prosecutor in Quezon City against Dan Ismael and three criminal cases for his alleged social media posts where he accused the lawmaker of being corrupt.
She said Dan Ismael’s accusations were “baseless and malicious” and “it caused disservice to the people who expect truthful and respectful discourse in the democratic process.”
