5.9-magnitude quake rattles Sultan Kudarat, triggers series of aftershocks

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 5.9 earthquake jolted Sultan Kudarat on Easter Sunday, April 20, shaking several parts of Mindanao and triggering dozens of aftershocks.

Phivolcs said the offshore quake struck at 12:11 a.m., with the epicenter 51 kilometers southwest of Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

The tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Kiamba, Sarangani and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; and at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Alabel, Glan, and Maitum in Sarangani and Tupi in South Cotabato.

Meanwhile, Intensity III (weak) shaking was reported in Maasim, Malapatan, and Malungon in Sarangani; Banga, Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, Norala, Polomolok, Santo Niño, Surallah, Tampakann, Tantangan, and General Santos City in South Cotabato; and in Bagumbayan, Esperanza, Isulan, Senator Ninoy Aquino, and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity II (slightly felt) was recorded in Santa Cruz and Davao City in Davao del Sur; M'lang in Cotabato; and in Columbio and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat.

Meanwhile, the tremor was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Zamboanga City in Zamboanga del Sur and Hagonoy, Malalag, and Padada in Davao del Sur.

As of 4 a.m., Phivolcs has recorded 29 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.6 to 5.4.

Six of these were reported as felt.
