Even world-class athletes like pole vaulter EJ Obiena are not safe from scammers.
The two-time Olympian warned the public on Wednesday, April 2, about a person impersonating him and taking advantage of his name to ask for money on Telegram, an instant messaging app.
Obiena shared a post on social media from one of the scammer’s intended victims, where the person asked to borrow some money after his account exceeded.
“Initially did not doubt, but his calls and eagerness to get the money prompted me to confirm it with my friend, EJ. Fortunately, he was able to confirm it was not him before I was able to transfer the amount,” the victim wrote.
“Please be cautious everyone and report these scam accounts attempting to tarnish the name of Ernest (EJ)!” the post added.
Obiena is currently in Chinese Taipei after competing and winning a gold medal in the Taiwan International Pole Vault Competition.
