Movie poster artist Drew Struzan battling Alzheimer's

Struzan's work includes the posters for "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," "Back to the Future," and many more.

TIMELESS POSTERS Drew Struzan has painted several iconic movie posters over the years

 

Drew Struzan, best known for painting several iconic Hollywood movie posters, is currently battling Alzheimer's. Struzan's work includes the posters for "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," "Back to the Future," and many more. 

 

His wife, Dylan Struzan, shared the news through Drew's Facebook fan page. "Good morning all. I’m Drew’s wife, Dylan Struzan. I come to you with a heavy heart. Several years ago, Drew was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. As you may know, the early stages are a slow progression of forgetfulness. This happens in the brain when the proteins in the neurons begin to fold improperly." From the post, Dylan claims Drew is "fighting for his life" and "can no longer paint or sign things for you." She reassures his fans that he hears all the loving comments left by fans and that it encourages him.

Drew's start as an artist was not an easy path. In an interview with "The Orange County Register," some years ago, Drew mentioned how he used to draw on toilet paper with pencils as a child since it was the only paper available to use. He eventually made an earning by making cover art for various music albums. Among the most well-known is the cover for Alice Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare." He would then go on to make posters for B-movies. It was in the '70s when Struzan's career went to great heights after a fellow artist asked him to help make a movie poster for a re-release of George Lucas' "Star Wars." By the '80s, his posters were a common sight for various Hollywood blockbuster screenings. Even as digital poster making started to take the norm in the early 2000s, Struzan continued making art for films like the "Harry Potter" and "Hellboy" franchises.
