Grassfire on Taal Volcano Island stops after 18 hours, Phivolcs confirms

A grassfire that broke out at the southwest portion of Taal Volcano Island, affecting the Binintiang Munti (VTBM) Observation Station, has stopped as of 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The fire was first detected by an IP camera at the Agoncillo (VTAG) Observation Station in Batangas at 11:24 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1.

Phivolcs noted that this is not the first time VTBM has been affected by similar incidents.

Grassfires occurred in the area on March 3, 2023, and May 2, 2024, believed to have been started by kindling.

Phivolcs said it will continue to monitor the situation and is coordinating with the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils of Batangas province.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level volcanic activity.
