At a glance

  • His over 20 years as a television, radio, print, and online newsman makes him qualified for the role. (pero baby face pa rin ha!)

Presidential Communications Office Assistant Secretary Erel Cabatbat

My heart will always have a soft spot for broadcast journalist, Erel Cabatbat. (forever yan ha!) We were colleagues in RPN-9 News for so many years. (pero hindi naging kami ha!) He was our senior reporter and executive producer. (bawal ang pashonga shonga sa kanya!) He treated me like his little brother. (hindi sister ha!) I remember, he would even lend me money during challenging times. (minsan pa nga, bigay na! dinaig ko pa may sustento!)

We lost communication when I joined showbiz. (wow parang artista lang!) We both became talents of TV5 but never had the chance to meet because I was in the entertainment department and he was with the news team. (o baka naman attitude lang ako!) After 20 years, we reconnected when he visited our Marites University studio. (may friend kasi sya dun!) We had fun reminiscing about the old days. (akala ko maiiyak nga ako!) When he learned about my artworks, he immediately availed one. (certified FU art collector na sya!)

I am proud of his recent achievement. He was appointed Assistant Secretary for Integrated Messaging under Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Jay Ruiz. (na kabatch ko naman noon bilang TV police reporter ha!)

“More than a rare opportunity, I accepted the role in PCO because I believe in a government that is expected to serve the people. It is a privilege to serve our people, and by being a part of the PCO, I can help achieve this goal. Kahit isang tao lang mabago ang buhay masaya na kami. But of course, we want to serve as many Filipinos as possible," Asec Erel says. (may pa-service ang koya ko!)

His over 20 years as a television, radio, print, and online newsman makes him qualified for the role. (pero baby face pa rin ha!)

“The PCO’s primary goal is to make PBBM’s good governance known and accessible to our people. The government is implementing many programs and projects for our people, but most don’t know these efforts and services. So if they don’t know about these, how can they avail of opportunities that would impact their lives? As a broadcast journalist for more than 20 years, in both TV and radio, plus writing online and in print, I believe I have the necessary experience and competence to be part of the government’s main communications team," Asec Erel shares (naman!)

He finished AB Philosophy and Letters at San Beda College. He is about to complete his master's degree in journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University. (paandar!) “I have to be well informed of what is happening to our country and events outside our shores that may impact our people. I also listen to our people’s sentiments. And most of all, ingat sa fake news.” (no to fake ever!)

Asec Erel is determined to be part of a reliable communication in the Malacanang Palace. (dadalhin kita sa aking palasyo!)

“Our utmost goal is to bring PBMM’s good governance to all Filipinos. The second is to fight fake news because there is no more accountability and order when it comes to the proliferation of fake news. It has been weaponized to the point that a single malicious lie can make an impact worse than a bomb. Spreading fake news can be considered a terrorist act," Asec Erel explains. (afraid sa weapons!)
