Police rescue team mobilized for 10 missing Pinoy, Chinese crew of capsized vessel off Mindoro waters

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has mobilized a team of rescuers for the conduct of search and rescue mission for 10 Filipinos and foreigners who are still missing after a foreign vessel capsized off the waters of Rizal, Occidental Mindoro.

Police Brig. Gen. Roger L. Quesada, director of the Police Regional Office 4B, said the foreign vessel operated by FMC Shipping Management Corporation was carrying 25 people when the incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. on April 15 in the seawaters off Barangay Malawaan. 

Of the 25 people on board, Quesada said the report they received was that 13 of them are Filipinos while the rest are Chinese.

“Based on the initial information received by Rizal Municipal Police Station they were preparing to depart while loaded with sand when it suddenly tilted and capsized,” said Quesada.

As of Wednesday, April 16, the official said 15 people were already rescued—nine Chinese and six Filipinos.

He said a Chinese national was recovered but was declared dead at San Jose District Hospital.

On the other hand, he said 10 individuals remain missing and are believed to be trapped inside the vessel.

“I have already directed the provincial director of Occidental Mindoro (Police Col. Timoteo Espiritu, Jr.) to mobilize police units, ensure coordination with concerned agencies, secure the area, assist survivors, and provide timely reports to support the ongoing rescue and recovery operations,” said Quesada.

“We are committed to exerting all efforts and working closely with our partners on the ground to save lives and bring swift resolution to this incident,” he added.
