119 drivers, conductors in Cordillera test negative for drugs

BAGUIO CITY – One-hundred nineteen drivers and conductors tested negative for illegal drugs in a surprise drug test conducted by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Cordillera in major public transportation hubs here on Wednesday to ensure the safety of travelers during Holy Week.

THE PDEA-Cordillera conducted random drug tests on drivers and conductors in public transport terminals in Baguio City on April 16.

PDEA partnered with with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to implement Oplan: Byaheng Ayos Semana Santa.

PDEA also inspected passengers’ luggage and cargo with narcotic detection dogs while LTO assessed public utility vehicles for roadworthiness and safety conditions and their compliance with regulations.

PDEA-Cordillera Regional Director Derrick Carreon said the 119 drivers and conductors voluntarily agreed to drug testing and all of them tested negative for illegal drugs.

“This surprise operation is being conducted for drug-free, comfortable, and safe terminals and public transportation, for tourists, residents, and the commuting public,” he said.

More than 300,000 tourists are expected to flock to Baguio City for the Holy Week.

The Baguio City Police Office has deployed 600 policemen to secure major roads, transportation hubs, and places of worship throughout the city to ensure a peaceful Holy Week.
