Aislinn Agnes Yap dominated the sport sambo adult women’s -80kg division after overpowering local bet Mavluda Abdullaeva in the gold-medal round, 1-0. The Filipina standout first blanked Kazakhstan’s Ultay Seiilova, 4-0, after the 3:07 contest.
Richmond Revina, meanwhile, came up short in the men’s -64kg sport sambo SVI-1 (totally blind) category after bowing to Uzbek Diyorbek Mayodnov in the finals, 8-0. He was coming off a 4-2 semifinal win over Kazakhstan’s Srazhdin Shavdinov before losing steam in the gold-medal phase.
With Yap’s golden performance, the squad has already eclipsed its previous feat of three silver and one bronze medal held in Macau, China last year.
The PH team hopes to gain more medals with Sydney Sy-Tancontian, Mark Edward Striegl and Orlando Castillo Jr. seeing action next.
Tancontian will be competing in the sport sambo adult women’ +80kg where she is first slated to face Kazakhstan’s Arailym Abenova, while Striegl will be battling in the combat sambo adult male -71kg over another Kazakh in Niyetkhan Toleukhan.
Castillo, meanwhile, will face Turkmenistan’s Mergen Durdyyev in the combat sambo adult male -64kg.
