Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts Sarangani — Phivolcs

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Sarangani at 5:42 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The epicenter was located 55 kilometers southwest of Maitum, Sarangani.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Kiamba, Sarangani, and in T'boli, Banga, Surallah, and Tupi in South Cotabato.

It registered as Intensity III (weak) in Maitum, Glan, Malungon, Malapatan, and Alabel in Sarangani, as well as in General Santos City, Norala, Koronadal City, Santo Niño, and Polomolok in South Cotabato.

Meanwhile, Intensity II was reported (slightly felt) in Maasim, Sarangani; Lake Sebu, Tantangan, and Tampakan in South Cotabato; and in Davao City, Davao del Sur.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, triggered by the movement of an active fault in the area.

It also warned of possible damage and aftershocks following the tremor.
