Senatorial candidate Ben Tulfo issued a warning against the possible exploitation of small-scale seaweed farmers and fisherfolk by traders, even before such incidents have been officially reported.

Speaking at a recent press conference in Zamboanga City, Tulfo called on his fellow media practitioners to act as a “watchdog” and closely monitor the actions of non-local traders who purchase seaweeds and fish from local communities.
The warning comes shortly after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) opened the Tigtabon Port in Zamboanga Province. The port aims to improve access for island-based farmers and fishers, enabling faster transport of seaweed harvests and fish to the mainland.
Tulfo emphasized that, in partnership with DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., he would ensure that both his office—should he win a Senate seat—and the his investigative platform will play a role in safeguarding the welfare of small-scale producers in the seaweed and fisheries sectors.
He also urged members of the media to remain vigilant and proactive in exposing any exploitation, abuse, or fraud committed by outside traders.
“I will make sure that the fisherfolk will not be abused, exploited, deceived and neglected. This will be part of my legislative agenda. I will not make a promise, I will just do it,” he said.
He emphasized the need to prevent any opportunity for abuse or deception, directing his focus on the sector of fisherfolk and farmers.
“When I get to the Senate, my door is open to the fisherfolk. My eyes are wide open. And there’s no elbow room for the abusers and exploiters,” he added.
