Police forces across the country were placed under heightened alert status as part of the comprehensive security measures for the long Holy Week break.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said the move was aimed at maximizing police visibility and ensuring that proactive public safety measures are in place as millions of Filipinos are expected to travel and observe the Holy Week.

“Let us ensure the safety of our people. Let them feel the presence of the police force in checkpoints and chokepoints,” said Marbil during the command conference with top police officials held on Monday, April 14, at Camp Crame.

In the same conference, Marbil tasked police commanders to monitor and prevent common crimes such as theft and burglary, especially during a time when many families travel for the holidays.

He also instructed all units to continue implementing the gun ban and enhance coordination with barangay officials, local watchmen (tanods), and private security personnel in subdivisions and commercial establishments to mitigate potential threats.

The PNP has mobilized over 40,000 policemen to secure major thoroughfares, churches, tourist sports and other places of convergence across the country.

Poll-related vigilance

In the same conference, Marbil cautioned police commanders about local candidates who may take advantage of the return of people to their hometowns during Holy Week to campaign.

“The Holy Week may become a window for electioneering as many people return to their hometowns. This may lead to a surge in political activities and called for vigilance,’ said Marbil.

With the ongoing election period, he stressed the need for vigilance in areas with reported violence.

Marbil likewise reminded all personnel to remain apolitical, citing recent incidents involving PNP personnel allegedly engaging in partisan activities.

“Do not allow yourselves to be used by politicians. Remain apolitical. We serve the Filipino people—not political interests,” he said,

“The PNP assures the public of its full commitment to maintaining peace and order, particularly during the Holy Week and the election season, through intensified police presence, strategic operations, and professionalism,” Marbil added.

Transparency

Marbil also reminded commanders to uphold transparency in crime reporting.

“Let us be transparent about crimes. If there is an increase, it's important that we acknowledge it so we can better understand the situation, respond appropriately, and find effective solutions. This is the true essence of public service," he said.

He also ordered continued use of body-worn cameras or alternative recording devices at checkpoints and chokepoints to ensure accountability and security before and during election activities.
