The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has temporarily suspended civil works along EDSA for the Holy Week break and will focus on preliminary preparations for the major rehabilitation of the thoroughfare.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, in an interview with Super Radyo dzBB, confirmed that the agency will install detour bridges, both southbound and northbound, during the break in construction activities.
“What we’ll do for now is install the detour bridges, both southbound and northbound, and then maybe after the ASEAN meeting, we’ll repair the two structures,” Bonoan said on Monday, Apr. 14.
The full-scale rehabilitation of EDSA is scheduled to begin after the May elections, with civil works set to start on May 15. The entire rehabilitation project is expected to cost P7.3 billion.
In a separate statement, DPWH–National Capital Region (NCR) Director Lorie Malaluan said the rehabilitation will be carried out in phases, starting with the northbound section from Balintawak to Monumento.
The southbound repairs will follow once the procurement process is completed.
Malaluan added that the project will involve reinforcing the pavement and applying anti-rutting asphalt modifiers to improve the road’s durability and safety for motorists.
The initial phase, covering the northbound segment, is projected to cost P300 million, while the 15 southbound segments are estimated at P7 billion, pending approval from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
