Ricci Rivero presided over a blistering start and Phoenix never looked back since then to essay a 109-97 shocker against defending champion Meralco in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Sunday, April 13.

Rivero ended up firing a career-high 20 points –14 of which he poured in the opening frame where the Fuel Masters set the tone to the rout with a 31-point explosion while limiting the sloppy Bolts to just 13 points.
Phoenix led by as many as 26 points as it took advantage of Meralco which surprisingly looked a step slower than usual.
Tyler Tio and fit-again Jason Perkins helped the Fuel Masters keep the Bolts at bay in the ensuing quarters with the former finishing with 22 points to go with six assists while the latter had 19.
Perkins played his first game in the conference after missing the first two assignments due to flu. In his stead, Kai Ballungay stepped up and sustained his splendid showing with 11 points and eight rebounds.
With the win, Phoenix has caught Meralco on a similar 1-2 record after also handing the Bolts their second straight defeat.
Meralco won its first game on a Chris Newsome buzzer-beater against Converge before it was manhandled by San Miguel in the rematch of last season’s finals.
Newsome tried everything he got to try and get his team back into the contest but the Bolts only looked like a shadow of themselves as they failed to showcase the usual defensive intensity against the Fuel Masters.
Offense seemed to be not the problem with Newsome leading six players in double-figures with 18, followed by Bong Quinto’s 17 and the 12 of both Aaron Black and Raymar Jose.
