The Philippines has provided a lawyer to defend the three Filipinos arrested in China for spying allegations, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

"There's a local lawyer taking on their case funded by the Philippines, by the DFA legal assistance fund," DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said in an interview with ANC on Wednesday, April 9.
De Vega said they are also requesting Chinese authorities to allow the lawyer to see the Filipinos in their detention.
"And we're strongly requesting the Chinese authorities for this lawyer at least to be allowed to see them in their detention in Hainan," he said, adding that they are now working on getting the approval of the provincial governor as well.
The Foreign Affairs official also denied that the three arrested Filipinos were involved in espionage, saying it could be a case of mistaken identity.
"It could be just a case of mistaken identity, maybe those three were not spies, were just taking photos," De Vega said.
The case, De Vega also said, was not a new case. They have been there for months, and China only gave out their names recently, he added.
He assured the families of the three nationals detained in China that the ambassador and Consular officials in Beijing are working with the Chinese authorities to ensure that the Filipinos are not put in worst scenario.
"We don't want to put them in worst scenario. I can confirm that our ambassador in Beijing, Consul General, spokesperson are working with Chinese authorities, lawyers, everything because all these are already legal. We'll see what we can do but we know that the family has been asking for help but you know this is, again, it's in China not in the Philippines, and they are very strict about this," De Vega said.
"I can't confirm if our consular people themselves have seen them baka hindi pa pinahihintulutan ng (maybe they haven't been allowed by the) Chinese government. We have different systems as you know. We have a different system about our own Constitutional freedoms. So, we're all doing what we can. We're not just talking to Beijing but even Chinese officials here," he added.
