A magnitude 4.9 earthquake hit Calatagan, Batangas late Tuesday afternoon, April 1, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
In its Earthquake Information No. 1, Phivolcs said the quake hit at 5:25 p.m., with its epicenter located 18 kilometers south-southwest of Calatagan.
The tremor originated at a depth of 117 kilometers, the state seismology bureau stated.
Although damage is unlikely due to the depth of the quake, Phivolcs said that aftershocks may occur.
Per the agency, it recorded Intensity II in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.
Intensity I was reported in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro; City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro; Magallanes, Carmona, and Tagaytay City in Cavite; and Abucay, Bataan, it added.
The quake, according to Phivolcs, was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of geological faults.
