The chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs has confirmed ongoing coordination with relevant local agencies to look after the welfare of Filipinos affected by the recent destructive earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand.
This, as Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre expressed his group's sense of deep solidarity toward the people of Myanmar and Thailand in the wake of the 7.7-magnitude earthquake last March 28.
"As chairperson of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, I express my full commitment to coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) to ensure the safety and welfare of our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the affected areas," Acidre said in a statement Monday, March 31.
"The protection of our modern-day heroes remains a paramount concern. We are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to mobilize assistance as needed," Acidre said.
The House leader said Tingog is in communication with relevant government agencies "to verify the condition of our kababayans, extend support services, and help ensure that contingency and evacuation plans are in place where necessary".
"Tingog reaffirms its mission of caring governance—responding with compassion, acting with urgency, and standing with our fellow Filipinos wherever they may be in the world," Acidre said.
"For any OFWs in Myanmar or Thailand in need of assistance, we urge you to contact the nearest Philippine Embassy or POLO (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) immediately. You are not alone—your country stands with you," he added.
The earthquake has reportedly claimed over 2,000 lives.
