'Filipinos do not yield': Human rights groups on China's claims over Palawan
Various human rights organizations, including the People’s Alliance for Democracy and Reform (PADeR), the Alyansa ng Bayan Para sa Demokrasya at Kapayapaan (ABKD), and the Liga Independencia Pilipinas (LIPI), vowed to strengthen their "Filipinos Do Not Yield Movement" to intensify resistance against China’s continued encroachment.
Dr. Jose Antonio Ejercito Goitia, Chairman Emeritus of PADeR, ABKD, and LIPI, dismissed China's territorial claim as “ludicrous” and a “blatant violation of international law.”
He stressed that these claims are not only baseless but also an "insult to the knowledge of Filipinos about their history and culture."
Goitia pointed out that China’s assertions directly contradict the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which China itself has signed.
Reflecting on the longstanding historical ties between the Philippines and China, he lamented the erosion of relationships that have been built over centuries of trade and cultural exchange.
Goitia also condemned China's actions in the West Philippine Sea, particularly the intimidation of Filipino fishermen and military personnel. He attributed these actions to deceptive economic agreements made during the previous administration, which he claims were a cover for Beijing's territorial ambitions.
He added that international experts continue to support the Philippines’ position, about the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which invalidated China's expansive claims in the region.
Goitia is also the first nominee of the Ang Bumbero ng Pilipinas (ABP), a partylist representing firefighters and fire volunteers and members of the PADER, LIPI and ABKD.
