Duterte confirms receiving rumors of arrest warrant from ICC
Former president Rodrigo Duterte again defended his administration’s anti-illegal drugs campaign amid reports of a looming arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Duterte was addressing reports of an alleged arrest warrant from the ICC during a campaign sortie for Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) senatorial candidates in Hong Kong, Sunday, March 9.
But the former leader reiterated that he did everything during his term as president—not for himself and his family—but for the benefit of the Filipino people.
“Sa totoo lang, ang balita ko may warrant daw ako sa ICC…matagal na akong hinahabol ng mga p
*,” Duterte said during the event held at Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai, Hong Kong and which was broadcasted live on the PDP-Laban’s Facebook page.
“Ano man ang kasalanan ko, na ginawa ko naman ang lahat sa panahon ko para may konting katahimikan at mapayapa ang buhay ng Pilipino (Whatever my sins are, during my time, I did them to bring some peace and security for the Filipino people),” he further stressed.
Duterte insisted that his actions as president were aimed at ensuring peace and order in the country.
“Tanggapin na lang natin kung ano ang nasa palad natin at magdasal tayo na yung pagod niyo ngayon dito, ang makinabang ang mga pamilya ninyo at ang mga anak ninyo (Let’s just accept our fate and just pray that whatever you worked hard for here, your family and your children will benefit from it),” the former chief executive also said.
“Assuming na totoo, totoo talaga yung naririnig nyo…Bakit ko ginawa yan? Para sa sarili ko? Para sa pamilya ko? Para sa inyo at para sa inyong mga anak (Assuming that it is true, that the reports are true…why did I do it? For myself? For my family? It’s for you and for your children),” he insisted.
In jest, Duterte asked the audience to contribute to at least $5 or $10 that they could use to fund the construction a monument in his honor and build it beside national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
“Ang hiling ko lang sa inyo, tutal kung ganito naman talaga ang swerte ko sa buhay, ok lang tatanggapin ko yan. Eh wala tayong magawa eh, kung hulihin tayo, ikulong tayo. Kaya lang,
Mag-contribute kayo, maski 5 dollars, 10 dollars, para paglabas ko sa presohan, pagawaan nyo ako ng monumento, katabi ni Rizal (My only appeal to all of you, if this is really going to happen to me, it’s okay, I will accept it. We can’t do anything, if we are arrested and sent to prison. But you can make contributions, just $5 or $10 so that once I get out of prison, you can build my monument and put it beside Rizal),” he said.
The former president reportedly left the Philippines for Hong Kong on March 7; but it was then reported that the ICC will possibly issue the arrest warrant for Duterte on March 8. This information was allegedly leaked to his camp.
