While she lauded the significant roles of Filipino women in governance, innovation, and communities, Vice President Sara Duterte underscored the need to strengthen laws, policies, and access to justice to protect women against violence and abuses.

In her message for the International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, the official sought attention to the “alarming reality that violence against women and children and human trafficking continue to threaten the safety and dignity of many.”

“Let us work together to strengthen our laws, improve access to justice, support survivors, and challenge the deeply rooted norms that enable violence,” she said.

Duterte added that how every sector of society—government, private institutions, civil society, and individuals—must work together “to break the cycle of abuse and exploitation.”

“Together, let us build a future where no woman fears for her safety, where every girl can pursue her dreams without fear of violence, and where equality is not just a goal, but a lived reality.”

The Vice President described domestic abuse, online exploitation and trafficking, and gender-based violence as “a persistent barrier to women’s empowerment.”

“The fight for women’s rights is not just about closing economic and political gaps—it is about ensuring that every woman and child is protected, heard, and allowed to thrive,” she said.

However, the official also noted the progress of the fight for women’s rights as Filipino women “are at the forefront of change” across sectors.

“Our resilience and contributions shape a more inclusive and progressive society,” Duterte said.

The International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s achievements in the political, cultural, social, and economic spheres every March 8.

It also calls for action to accelerate women’s equality.
