Filipino-Australian Grent Perez is slowly but surely carving a niche for himself in the local music scene.
The past two years, Grent has been dropping singles including "Cherry Wine," "2DK."
He is now out with his latest, "Movie Scene," which is going to be part of his upcoming album "Backflips In A Restaurant."
Grent shared how it all came about in an exclusive interview with Manila Bulletin Entertainment.
"The album is actually something that I've been kinda writing on and off for the past two years," he explained.
"I guess I could say that it all came about through experimentation. I really wanna experiment with who I was in terms of my music and who I am as an artist. I think the album is a good showcase of what I'm capable of as a musician, artist, and as grent."
The 23-year-old believes it is high time that people get to hear his music.
"It took me two years because I wasn't sure what I wanted. There's a few older songs there that I've had banked for a while. A lot that used to be Rnb and moody. I've had many different phases as a songwriter," he shared.
But how did his love for music start?
Grent maintained he was practically weaned on Pinoy karaoke.
"I grew up listening to so much OPM as well like Parokya Ni Edgar, MYMP, all that stuff, and through like karaoke, I heard so much music," Grent shared.
Although musically gifted, his parents were actually hesitant to give him their blessing when he announced that he is going to take on music as a full-time job.
"At the start, they didn't know what was going on," he recalled. "I told them that I could make this a job, that I was getting paid from YouTube. And then I told them that I found a management team, and that I want to start making this legit."
According to Grent, his parents were adamant that he finished his studies first.
At the time, he was going to a university, taking up arts.
"I was going to uni during COVID-19," Grent related. "I felt like I was wasting money on an art degree studying at home using all these school supplies and stuff. So I told them to give me two years to get this music thing going and if it doesn't go anywhere I'll go back to school."
An aunt finally convinced them.
"My Tita kinda told them, 'He sounds like he got a plan, you know he is young, so why not do it? He'll go back to school anyway.' So they trusted there gut and let me do it and now, here I am."
Asked if he is ready to work with local artists, Grent answered in the affirmative.
"I would really like to work maybe with Juan Karlos or Zack Tabudlo. I also just met Pio from Lola Amour," he shared.
"Backflips in a Restaurant," to be released via AWAL and Fast Friends, contains 13 tracks.
