Now showing in cinemas is “In Thy Name,” a film that tackles the abduction and subsequent death of Claretian priest Rhoel Gallardo.
It is quite the eye-opener, allowing for newfound understanding of the carnage that originally made headlines 25 years ago.
That said, it is not for the weak-hearted, given its gritty and realistic portrayal of pain, suffering, violence.

McCoy de Leon offered a moving performance as Father Rhoel.
Those accustomed to seeing him as the evil David Dimaguiba on “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” would be surprised to see his all-too meek depiction of the doomed priest.
His apparent commitment and dedication to the role, going far as to endure being slapped, kicked and spat upon, is also noteworthy.

Some of those that watched the film with us deemed his performance in “In Thy Name” “award-winning.”
JC De Vera and Mon Confiado, who played Abu Sayyaf group leaders Khadaffy Janjalani and Abu Sabaya, respectively, should be praised as well for their nuanced presentation of the real-life terrorists, displaying malevolence sans the usual over-the-top dramatics.

The big gun battle between the military and the Abu Sayyaf group was another remarkable highlight with film director Rommel Ruiz showing himself more than capable handling big action scenes.
Rommel maintained the film could be considered a different take on his previous short film titled “Sinadya Kong Kalimutan Para Maulit Ang Lahat” that screened in various film festivals in the country, like CCP Gawad Alternatibo and Cinema Rehiyon.

Rommel admitted filming was a huge challenge for him initially but he is thankful that all those involved in the production were more than helpful and cooperative, allowing him to fulfill his vision.
According to McCoy, Rommel served as a huge inspiration for him on set.
Produced by GreatCzar Media Productions and distributed by Viva Films, “In Thy Name” also stars Jerome Ponce, Yves Flores, Aya Fernandez, and Soliman Cruz, with special participation from John Estrada, Pen Medina, Ana Abad Santos, and Aaron Villaflor.
