CHR probes killing of Lanao del Sur ex-mayor

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has started its own investigation into the killing last Feb. 26 of former mayor Abdulazis Tadua Aloyodan of Lumbaca-Unayan town in Lanao del Sur.

Aloyodan was ambushed outside his residence by still unidentified gunmen.

In a statement, the CHR said its Quick Response Operation (QRO) will investigate whether the attack was politically motivated.

As the CHR denounced the shooting of Aloyodan, it recognized the efforts made by law enforcement agencies in addressing the senseless act of violence.

"Such incidents highlight the urgent need for heightened protection measures and swift action to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable. Given the recent ambush attempt on another vice mayor in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur, we raise alarm over the rising security concerns faced by local officials in the area," the CHR said.

It urged the government to quickly address these acts of violence, which it said has no place in a democratic society.

If these senseless attacks against local officials remain unaddressed, the CHR feared that the incidents will foster a culture of fear among constituents and voters.

"This chilling effect on our electoral system undermines the democratic process and hinders the country’s progress toward peace and security," it warned.

"Acts of brutality and lawlessness undermine peace, stability, and the fundamental rights of all individuals," it stressed.
