Over 40°C heat index possible in several areas on March 8-9 — PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said some parts of the country may see a heat index as high as 42 degrees Celsius (°C) this weekend as the warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, known as the easterlies, roll in.

In its two-day highest heat index forecast, PAGASA said Dagupan City in Pangasinan may experience a heat index of 42°C on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9.

This weekend, other areas that may experience a heat index from 40 to 41°C include Iba, Zambales; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Cuyo, Palawan; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Dumangas, Iloilo; Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur; Cotabato City, Maguindanao; Butuan City, Agusan del Norte; Metro Manila; Clark, Pampanga; Muñoz, Nueva Ecija; Cubi Pt., Subic Bay, Olongapo City; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Masbate City; Masbate; and Tacloban City, Leyte.

The heat index combines air temperature and relative humidity to estimate the apparent temperature, or how hot it feels to the human body.

A heat index between 42°C and 51°C is considered dangerous, as heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, and heatstroke is probable with continued exposure.

Meanwhile, PAGASA advises “extreme caution” when the heat index reaches 32°C to 41°C, as heat cramps and exhaustion are possible, and continuing activity can lead to heat stroke.
