In observance of Ramadan, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) announced on Friday, March 7, a modification to the official working hours for Muslim government workers.
The adjusted work hour schedule will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., eliminating the usual noon break.
The CSC assured that the two-hour difference will not be considered under time.
This change will apply throughout the duration of the fasting season.
Also, on Fridays, Muslim government workers will be excused from work between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to accommodate prayer time, in line with the religious observance.
The adjustment is in accordance with the Policies on Flexible Working Arrangements (FWAs), established to institutionalize work arrangements that promote efficiency in government functions, ensure effective public service delivery, and protect employees’ health, safety, and welfare.
CSC Resolution No. 00-0227 clarified that the “Friday” provision in CSC Resolution No. 81-1277 applies to all Fridays of the year, not just those during Ramadan. To maintain a full 40-hour workweek, the CSC has authorized the adoption of flexible working hours, provided they start no earlier than 7 a.m. and end no later than 7 p.m.
The CSC said Muslim employees in government offices are now permitted to take advantage of the flexitime arrangement outlined in the CSC Memorandum Circular No. 06, issued on June 6, 2022.
Ramadan this year began on the evening of March 2, marking the start of a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims worldwide.
