Removing impeached Vice President Sara Duterte from office is crucial in proving to the Filipino people that public officials are being held accountable to their actions, a lawmaker said Wednesday, March 5.
La Union 1st district Rep. Paolo Ortega said that Duterte's impeachment will serve as a test of the government's commitment to transparency and good governance amid allegations surrounding her office's use of confidential funds.
His remark came as the latest Social Welfare Stations (SWS) survey showed that seven out of 10 Filipinos favor candidates who champion anti-corruption measures.
"We cannot allow corruption to continue unchecked. If we turn a blind eye now, we are essentially telling Filipinos that integrity does not matter in leadership," he said.
"And that is a dangerous precedent to set," Ortega warned.
The lawmaker then called out the Senate's delay in proceeding with the impeachment trial. He said it raises questions on political maneuvering and double standards in delivering justice.
“Justice delayed is justice denied. Kung gusto, may paraan. Kung ayaw, maraming dahilan (If there's a will, there's a way)," he said.
He said the members in the upper chamber must show their commitment to due process and the rule of law by allowing the impeachment trial to proceed "without delay".
