PBA plans to stage 'retro' game on 50th anniversary

League commissioner Willie Marcial bared the plans on Wednesday, March 5, noting that the PBA is already in talks with the Philippine Sports Commissioner for possibly holding a game at the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The PBA is in talks for a possibility of staging a "retro" game on the exact day of the league’s 50th anniversary celebration on April 9.

League commissioner Willie Marcial bared the plans on Wednesday, March 5, noting that the PBA is already in talks with the Philippine Sports Commissioner for possibly holding a game at the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Should everything go smoothly, Marcial said the game will feature a clash between San Miguel and Meralco which will then wear their retro jerseys.

The San Miguel franchise was the only remaining pioneer in the league when it carried the name Royal-Tru Orange during PBA’s inaugural season in 1975.

The Meralco franchise, on the other hand, although only joined the league in 2010, was also part of the PBA’s predecessor, the Manila Industrial Commercial Athletic Association.

“Baka maglaro tayo sa April 9 sa Rizal. Kinakausap pa namin ang Rizal, tinitignan pa rin natin, nasa planning stage tayo, San Miguel at Meralco, suot nila ang retro jersey nila,” said Marcial.

The league chieftain added that other activities on the said date are yet to be ironed out including a possible first game which will serve as an appetizer to the retro game.

Meanwhile, rest of the celebration, including the induction of the 10 new players to the league’s 50 Greatest Players list, is expected to highlight the league’s formal anniversary celebration which likely to be moved to April 11 to accommodate more fans.
