Despite repeated warnings and reminders to respect the road and maintain discipline while driving, a 15-year-old boy riding a motorcycle without a helmet was caught by the Baras Rizal Police following a high-speed chase along Marilaque Highway in Baras that ended in Antipolo City.
According to Baras Police chief Maj. Roberto Papa, the boy was riding his motorcycle with his friends when the police spotted them.
Upon seeing the approaching police, the teen boy's companions shouted at him to escape from the police, leading to the chase. He was apprehended upon reaching Antipolo City.
Papa said the boy was not charged since he is a minor but his motorcycle was impounded.
“Inimpound din namin ang kanyang motorsiklo and sinampahan din natin ng iba’t-ibang mga violations sa traffic rules (We impounded his motorcycle and slapped him with numerous traffic violations)," Papa said.
Highway stunt
Aside from the 15-year-old boy, a 19-year-old rider was also caught by the police performing dangerous riding exhibitions on the highway, with one of his stunts even causing him to fall from his motorcycle.
This prompted the police to warn him. However, instead of heeding the warning, the rider sped off, forcing the police to chase him.
The man was charged with various violations such as failure to carry his vehicle’s Land Transportation Office Official Receipt and Certificate of Registration (LTO OR/CR), reckless driving, defective and improper accessories, driving an unregistered motorcycle, and unauthorized motorcycle modification.
The police chief said the rider was initially detained but has since posted bail.
Meanwhile, his motorcycle was impounded by the police as well.
Maging Responsable, Wag Kamote
Famous for its high-speed turns and straights, Marilaque Highway has been a top spot for motorcycle riders to feel the thrill of their bikes.
This, however, leads to crashes and road mishaps that even claimed the life of a motorcycle rider in January after he performed the "Superman Technique" along a portion of the highway.
Another rider was left seriously injured during the stunt.
The incident led the police to set up checkpoints and increase police visibility in the area to remind motorists to refrain from doing stunts and maintain discipline while riding.
“Ang Marilaque ay para sa lahat, hindi po ito race track. Sa mga kamote riders, hindi po kayo open dito sa Marilaque. Makisama kayo, kung magra-ride kayo, mag-ride lang. Wala pong karera or mga exhibition (Marilaque is not a race track, it is a road for everyone. To all kamote riders, Marilaque is not exclusive to people like you. Please be mindful of your actions while riding and refrain from being reckless," Papa stressed.
