Philippine cinema's legendary "Superstar", Nora Aunor, has abandoned her bid for congresswoman and instead endorsed Kabayan Party-list ahead of the May 12 mid-term elections.
This was bared to House reporters on Wednesday afternoon, March 5 by incumbent Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo through a statement.
The veteran actress and singer--also known as "Ate Guy"--had just withdrawn as a nominee of the People’s Champ Guardians Party-list.
"Imbes na maghanap pa ng posisyon, mas pinili kong suportahan ang subok na sa tunay na serbisyo sa bayan, at ito ay ang Kabayan Party-list (Instead of seeking a position, I would just rather support Kabayan Party-list, which is tried and tested in term of public service)," Aunor was quoted as saying in the statement.
Salo, for his part, said: "We are honored to receive the support of Ms. Nora Aunor, a beloved icon whose life has inspired countless Filipinos."
"Just as she has dedicated her life to her craft and to the Filipino people, we remain committed in pushing for meaningful legislation that secures their welfare and future," said the sitting congressman.
Kabayan Party-list said Aunor's decision was a reflection of their shared commitment in uplifting marginalized communities and ensuring their rights and welfare are protected.
The well-loved Aunor, 71, is a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts.
Kabayan Party-list has consistently championed landmark legislation that ensures the protection and empowerment of Filipinos, both at home and abroad.
Among these are the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers (Republic Act No.12021), which guarantees the rights, benefits, and protection of our seafarers; the Universal Health Care Act (RA No.11223), which ensures that all Filipinos, regardless of economic status, have access to quality healthcare; the Department of Migrant Workers Act (RA No.11641), which strengthens government support for OFWs; and the Transnational Higher Education Act (RA No.11448), which expands access to international-quality education.
The party-list has also fought for policies that bolster vital industries, including the Philippine Salt Industry Development Act (RA No.11985) to revitalize the local salt sector.
