NAIA launches automated parking system to cut wait time

Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has launched an automated parking system that aims to significantly reduce waiting times and improve overall traffic flow within the country’s primary gateway.

The airport’s private operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) opened the system at Terminal 3 on March 1, with expansion at Terminals 1 and 2 set for March 14.

With this new parking system, drivers will enter through unmanned entrances, where they must obtain an automated ticket before entering the facility.

To exit, drivers will be using a QR code-based system.

As of writing, NNIC said only cash payments are accepted in the system.

However, starting March 14, it will support multiple payment options, including GCash, PayMaya, debit, and credit cards for a more convenient experience.

Next month, NNIC will install real-time parking slot displays at Terminal 3 to allow drivers to check available spaces before entering. This will be available at Terminals 1 and 2 by May.

In July, autopay stations will be operational across all terminals to further speed up transactions.
 
NNIC said the automated parking scheme is part of its efforts to modernize and improve services for the airport once tagged as the world’s worst.

NNIC, a San Miguel Corp. (SMC)-led consortium, took over NAIA operations in September 2024 with a commitment to spend over ₱170 billion to elevate the airport to world-class standards.

Among the changes pledged by NNIC is an increased attention to parking facilities, with plans to construct new infrastructure to increase capacity.

The operator was quick to raise parking rates, particularly for overnight parking, or for those staying beyond 24 hours. The prior rate of ₱300 for cars jumped to ₱1,200, with motorcycles adjusted to ₱480, and buses to ₱2,400.

While this decision was met with public outcry, NNIC defended it as move to “optimize parking facilities by prioritizing parking for passengers.”
