Rehab of Carlos Romulo Bridge in Pangasinan kicks off

BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan – The municipal government kicked off on Monday the rehabilitation of the Carlos Romulo or Wawa Bridge here.

A part of the bridge collapsed on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, after a 12-wheel truck and an Elf truck weighing 63.3 tons passed. The bridge only had a load capacity of 20 tons.

A two-way temporary bridge was built by the Department of Public Works and Highways-Pangasinan Fourth District Engineering Office to ease traffic and connect residents in January.

Mayor Niña Jose-Quiambao said the rehabilitation heralds the beginning of the reconstruction of a significant part of Bayambang’s history.

“This bridge is considered one of the town's most well-known landmarks and the most distinctive architecture in Bayambang," Quaimbao said.

Four people were injured when the bridge linking Pangasinan and Camiling in Tarlac collapsed.

Reconstruction would cost about P300 million and will be implemented by the DPWH-Region 1.

Barangay Captain Mirasol Catubay thanked the municipal government for rehabilitating the bridge that would shorten travel time to Manila and other parts of the province.

Quiambao thanked the national government for making the project a reality.
