A lawyer is vying to become Talisay City, Negros Occidental’s first lady mayor.

ROWENA Lizares (Glazyl Masculino)
Incumbent Mayor Neil Lizares’ wife Rowena, fondly called “Weng,” is joining politics for the first time, aiming to continue the legacy of her husband, who is now on his last term.
“This is something new to me, but at the same time not,” Rowena said in a media interview on Monday, when asked about her feeling in running for a higher position in her first political campaign.
Rowena said that she had been rallying behind her husband since he was councilor, thus, she also knew what is going on in the city.
“I’m glad he passed it on to me,” she added.
Bacolod Mayor Albee Benitez backed Rowena’s slate with the slogan “Padayon ang Asenso sa Gwapa nga Panghimanwa.”
Clad in red shirts, the team heard Mass at the La Costa Brava clubhouse, followed by a caravan and an opening salvo at the Barangay Concepcion covered court on Monday afternoon.
She thanked their supporters for the warm welcome. “This inspires us to continue all plans of the present administration,” she said.
She hopes for a peaceful campaign.
Rowena’s running mate reelectionist Vice Mayor Nicolas Jalandoni III assured the people of Talisay that check and balance in the government will be implemented. He said that he is excited with the campaign as this will enable them to present their platforms.
Candidates for councilors in her slate are Engr. Emmanuel Ebro, Merci Ereñeta, Bebe Estelloso, Wayne Faisan, Martin Lizares, Nonoy Malan, Erlou Penado, Kenn Tirthdas, Jun-Jun Treyes, and Yuri Tuvilla.
Mayor Lizares backed his wife’s slate and thanked the people of Talisay for supporting him in his nine-year term when the city recorded milestones.
Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez, who was running as congressman in the third district of the province, also expressed support to the team and admired the governance of Talisay under Lizares’ stint.
Former Vice Mayor Samuel Siote is challenging Rowena and Councilor Gab Villacin is running against Jalandoni.
Team SAGA (Sam and Gab) with the slogan “Ti-on na sang Pagbag-o” kicked off their campaign at the Talisay City public plaza on Saturday, March 29.
Team SAGA candidates for councilors are Jenry Clavecillas and Gelo Lacson, Atty. Bimbo Lavides, Zenia Astorga, Renil Garcia, Ging Mahandog, Emil Lopez Lizares, and Jaime Mariquit, and reelectionists Atty. Remus Gulmatico and Stephen Siote.
