PH hosts US, Japan, Australia in 'Core 4' meet to align military drills

Senior military leaders from the Philippines, United States, Japan and Australia discussed initiatives to strengthen regional security during a high-level meeting hosted by the Philippine Army (PA) in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City over the weekend.
Held from March 1 to 2, the meeting was attended by the technical working group (TWG) from the land forces of the four countries, dubbed as "Core 4". It was designed to align the military exercises of the four nations and reinforce their collective defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region, PA spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said on Monday, March 3.
The meeting was attended by Brigadier General Dean Thompson (G3, Australian Army), Maj. Gen. Scott Winter (G5, US Army Pacific), Col. Christopher Winn (G5, US Marine Corps Forces in the Pacific), Maj. Gen. Norimichi Shirakawa (G5, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force), Brig. Gen. Vicente Map Blanco III (deputy commandant, Philippine Marine Corps), and Maj. Gen. Leodevic Guinid, PA vice commander.
“The meeting focused on enhancing interoperability and aligning military exercises among regional partners and allies, reinforcing collective defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific Region. Discussions emphasized the importance of information sharing and mutual trust, recognizing these as key pillars for effective multilateral cooperation,” Dema-ala said.
He said that through the meeting, the member-nations of the Core 4 vowed to strengthen regional security and advance operational synergy across their land forces.
The next CORE 4 engagement will take play in May in Hawaii during the Land Forces Pacific.
The forum will provide another opportunity for participating nations to advance strategic initiatives and further strengthen military partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, Dema-ala said.
