The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has started installing pre-stressed concrete deck girders for the Guicam Bridge, a key inter-island infrastructure project linking Olutanga Island to the mainland in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay.
DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, in a report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, said four concrete girders have been successfully launched between Abutment A and Pier 1 of the P1.155-billion bridge project along the Lutiman-Guicam-Mabuhay-Olutanga Road.
Spanning 1.21 kilometers across Canalizo Strait, the bridge is part of the Marcos administration’s Bagong Pilipinas initiative to improve connectivity in remote areas and spur economic growth.
DPWH has completed all 115 bored piles, fabricated 33 out of 48 girders, finished Abutment B, and constructed seven out of 11 piers, marking significant progress in the project.
Set for completion in 2025, the bridge is expected to enhance mobility, boost trade, and improve access for residents and businesses in Zamboanga Sibugay, Sadain said.
Once completed, the Guicam Bridge will have a total length of 540.80 meters and a width of 6.70 meters, with approach roads measuring 389.60 meters on the mainland and 277.62 meters on Olutanga Island.
Funded through the Asian Development Bank’s Loan No. 3631-PHI under the Build Better More program, the project aims to strengthen the province’s transportation network and economic activity.
Beyond economic benefits, the bridge is expected to support farmers and fisherfolk by improving access to markets and resources.
It is also seen as a key infrastructure initiative that will promote integration between Olutanga Island and the mainland, fostering peace and development in the region.
